A look at Adventure Time.
The TV show that I've chosen to research is… Adventure Time. Adventure Time started life as a pilot for Nickelodeon in 2007, then went viral on the internet and was noticed by Cartoon Network started production for it to air in 2010.
The Setting:
The show is set in the (kid friendly Dungeons and Dragons.. esque) land of Ooo and follows the everyday adventures of its' inhabitants, Finn and Jake in particular.
Target Audience:
Age: 13+, this is
because that whilst the show has bright colours, there is some dark patches,
i.e. the in-show reason for the setting or general creepiness of some the antagonists:
I.E. The lich (that dude is seriously creepy).
Gender: both genders can watch this show for... nearly the
same reasons.
Humour: its' humour is a mix of weird, stupid and
intelligent.
Characters: This is due to:
a.
The designs of the protagonist’s and
antagonists.
b.
How the script is written and delivered to give
all of the shows characters a natural speech pattern.
Lifestyle:This show is for the nerds, whether they're
creative or just really nerdy.
Sexual orientation:
Adventure time doesn't cater to a specific orientation.
Culture: This show is
rich in nerd culture.
Codes used in this show:
Language:
Verbal:Scripts are written
with natural, teenage banter in mind, loaded with kid friendly swears/slang:
e.g. buns=butt or ass.
Visual: Adventure time
tends to use block colours with (deceptively) simple character and background
designs.
Aural:The sound effects
are used when the situation is appropriate: i.e. when Finn and Jake are kicking
the Ice Kings’ “buns”, the synthesised music will match the setting and the
atmosphere of any given episode.
Although the show has silly,
random humour throughout there can be intelligent and adult innuendoes.
Here is the viewing figures of Cartoon Network (for the week ending on the 01/06/2014) from BARB.co.uk
Generic:
Narrative:Each episode is
connected, episodic and fly on the wall. This allows the characters to develop
throughout the shows’ run and gives fan favourite characters their time in the
sun. As the show is episodic in nature, it can be easily watched by new viewers
who have never seen the show and yet allows its’ followers to see how each
recurring character/s have grown.
